Colonel. Robert Gould Shaw
Was the leader of the first African American regiment in the civil war in 1863. He was 25 years old when took hold as colonel. Shaw and Maj. Cabot Forbes had little faith in this new regime and thought they would never see action.
Robert grew up with an abolishonist family but thought differently from his parents about the idea of freing slaves. In 1861 robert dropped out of Harvard University and inlisted in the New York infantry. After a while Shaw gradually ranked up to captain. The Governer of Massachusetts, John A. Andrew, recruited Shaw to command one of the first regiments of African American troops of the Union army. Shaw grew tolerant of the idea that he could fight just as well with black soldiers as he would with white soldiers. Shaw Was eager to get his men into action to hopfully prove to other troops that his army full of black soldiers is capable of fighting a war as good as other troop that is white. It was found out that the black soldiers were to not recieve the same amount of pay as the white soldiers so Shaw lead his troop into a boycott of all wages untill the situations was resolved.
